Designing your success – working with type to project the right image
As I hope the above image demonstrates, getting it wrong when it comes to typography can really confuse your company’s image. The subject of type is an incredibly broad one but it doesn’t need to be complicated, I hope here to give you a few tips to help you make informed decisions about typefaces.
The first step when choosing a typeface for your business is to decide upon a category, for the most part this will mean choosing between serif or sans-serif fonts
Serifs
Serious, traditional businesses use serif fonts, Serifs are the little flares on the edges of the letter shapes in fonts such as times new roman The serif references ancient roman script, and as such bring with them an air of tradition, of history. These fonts are often chosen by companies who want to paint a picture of old fashioned reliability.
Serif fonts are often thought to be the most legible in long passages of printed text
Sans-serif
Sans serif (without serif) fonts include arial and helvetica. They give a cleaner more modern feel to a piece of text. Serif fonts make for more legible headings and are equal to sans-serif fonts in legibility on the web. These fonts are often used in signage because of the clear letterforms
The subject of typography is incredibly broad, if you are involved in choosing a typeface for your business take the time to think about what sort of business you work in, what sort of image you want to portray and who you’re talking to.
